Palmer Lake Oldies
Author: railtime

The era of the DPU was just beginning. The pushers were still being added at Big Lift to shove over the great Palmer Divide. The helpers would uncouple by the runaround track and then slowly follow the coal load up and across the switch to wait for the dispatcher to throw the turnout and head back north with their blue and white motors for another shove.

Thanks for looking

john

What year did DPs appear, and when did they completely replace manned helpers over Palmer Divide? My only photos in the area were of BN manner helpers in 1984.

Regular manned helpers were phased out of coal service sometime around 2003/04. As stated above, they still run on occasion, mostly to help grain and oil trains.
