WP never had a unit numbered 8248.

Indeed - what exactly is that?

I'm guessing this is actually former UP 8248, an SD9043MAC temporarily sporting "WP" reporting marks while awaiting being renumbered. Not the WP heritage unit.

The WP heritage unit would report as UP1983.

Yeah, this is just an regular old UP SD9043MAC. As mentioned above, some of them were temporarily relettered as WP to make room for new ES44AC's.

And she was at the Lake yard in Portland, OR, this afternoon, surprisingly second out!

The unit in question is actually UP 3772, an SD9043AC. It had been WP 8248 while in storage, but was renumbered to UP 3772 when returned to service a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately this one made it out of the shop without the AEI tags being updated to reflect the renumbering.

Isn't that a FRA violation?

Mistake yes. FRA violation no. The unit is clearly identified in person and that is all anyone in the field needs. An AEI tag is only for the computers to track movements anyway. The issue has already been noted in the computer that the tags are incorrect and as soon as the unit makes it back to the UP and into a shop they will be corrected. Minor deal in the scope of things. Tags coming off or going bad also happens frequently. They just fix them next time in the shop. One isn't pulling a unit out of service account a bad AEI tag.
