“And the hits just keep on coming…” As if the momentum-gathering threat of rerouting wasn’t enough, Amtrak’s beleaguered Southwest Chief seems to be particularly snake-bit the last few days. Hopelessly late has been a recent moniker. And if it isn’t some ‘foreign’ color up front pinch-hitting for sick power, it’s a normal (& healthy) consist bouncing off a dern BNSF derailment; having to retrace its steps (backward) to Chicago. Sheesh! Can't win for losing...

1. 2. & 3. AMTK 171 leads a VERY late train #4 into the station stop at the former Santa Fe passenger station Newton, KS. Amtrak’s station agent here had 4 sacks of groceries to hand up to the steward. It seems the dining car was running short on a few items…

4. & 5. Train #4 is approaching the 12th Street crossing on the east side of town with the famous “ROSS” elevator as a backdrop. If I read the name on their office door correctly this huge complex is now operated by ‘Ardent Industries’.

6. The consist-backward is lit-perfectly as the train off-rolls into the East-north in the day-mid sunlight…

6 cars not inc. bag. Pathetic. Where is the Sightseer Lounge? Fun trip without one. Not only is it a crap shoot if your power will break down, but also if the equipment you are suppose to have turns up.

Looks like that sleeper has one of those door covers on it to reduce the diesel exhaust intake.

Yes, the 37016.
