Another dude with a surfboard - railfan dude?
Author: pummer

Most of the people along the beach at Del Mar, California seem oblivious to the rail activity going on, but this surfer actually stopped to watch this BNSF freight roll by. Initially, I was upset that he was in "my" shot, but I chose to include him to add something extra to the scene.

Great photo and a nice change from seeing pedestrians doing what they should not do.
Looks like a noontime shot so it's time to ask if freight schedules into and out of San Diego have changed.  Last info I had was the outbound leaves and about 7:00 p.m. and the inbound arrives close to midnight.

And as soon as the train goes by he's probably going to walk across the tracks...

Which I have  been informed by knowledable sources is perfectly legal in CA when a public crossing is not within a certain distance.

I wouldn't want someone in all my pictures but occasionally it's a nice addition.  In this case, it's a nice addition.  Watching people watch trains.  That's what we do, "watch trains."

Nice photos and catch!  A day time BNSF run into San Diego is a rare treat.  I wonder if the schedule into San Diego has changed?  Thanks for sharing.

Must be a popular spot as the path is well worn. And where he is standing seems like a safe distance doing exactly what would be safe I see no problem. And anyone who has not walked from one side of a railroad track where there is no crossing please feel free to cast that stone.

That place always made me nervous when running.  I always laid on the horn so there was no mistake about what was coming.  Got the last few inches of a surfboard one morning.  Looked like popcorn in the mirror but thank goodness the kid holding it was okay.  Those "dudes" would sometime put an old board upright between the rails and hitting them sure made quite a sight.

Very cool!  That's not a shot you can get in that many parts of the country.

Looks like well established and used trail.  Also looks like some crossing warning signs where the trail crosses the tracks.

Great picture. Captures an "only in California" moment. You should submit it to the LA Times.

That trail has a long history.  I used it fairly frequently in the late 1970s and early 1980s when I used to go jogging along the cliff top or down along the beach when I lived nearby.  There are several others, typically at the ends of the east-west streets in Del Mar.
