Awesome picture and I'm sure it sounded great when she went screaming by!

Just saw an article last week about possibly upgrading the B52 with the engines on the new
air to air refueling planes.  Reduced fuel consumption, more power, less maintence and of
course less polution.

B52 first built in 1955  so that there is like a GP9 but of course rebuilt with 710 prime mover AC traction and good to go for another 25 years.

The B-52H's that are flying now were all built in 1961-1963 with TF-33 Turbofan engines.
So it's more like a GP30...

They've been talking about reengining the Buff for about 10 years now. They were all set to replace the eight Pratt & Whitney TF-33's with four Rolls-Royce RB-211's when the money got cut.

Some mines use kerosene to keep coal dust down. There is probably enough unburned jet A blowing out that aircraft to put a dampness on all those coal loads to keep them in place.

I see he's laying down a nice trail of that mind-control stuff, too. :)

One smok'n old Buff, leaves more soot in  the air than an entire coal train! Just needs some F4's leaving smoke trails along side to complete the picture!

Great pict!

And the thing no one mentioned is about a 30% increase in range.

They used to pass low over the water treatment plant that I worked at on their take offs and landings from March AFB in So. Cal. until we started to get hydrocarbon pollution in the water and they traced it to the exhaust from the low flying jets, so the AF had to moved their pattern out some to avoid passing over the plant, then the neighbors in the housing tract started to complain about the noise.  The AF just couldn't win.

Imagine standing here
http://tinyurl.com/oqnklsx
at the east end of the Cascade Tunnel, hearing jet noise way louder than you should be hearing, looking up and around for it and seeing a B52 looking just about like in this pictre appear out of a canyon at low speed, maybe 200 mph, pass overhead, and disappear in a canyon on the other side of the track. I amagine that was practice in avoiding radar detection.

It was impressive.

My first involvement with a proposal was about 1985. My boss had been involved in the engineering on the KC-135R, and carrying the concept over. It wasn't his first attempt, and he kept pushing until he retired about 95.
