Western Railroad Discussion > UP949 Rolled Into the ShopDate: 04/15/15 00:49 UP949 Rolled Into the Shop Author: imrl Heard a rumor that the UP949 had moved across town to the Neff Yard Diesel Shop in preparation for getting some new wheels. After my near 13 hour train ride, I decided I could spare a minute to see if it was true. The rumor was indeed true! The 949 has been rolled inside the shop and is spotted on the drop table. You can see some new wheel sets and traction motor combos by the rear of the locomotive. I do not know if they are for the 949 or another locomotive. At least some positive progress is being made!

We've seen in the past an SD70 assisting steam, so maybe we could accept an SD70 behind the 3 E9s to provide enough power for the longer passenger equipment moves--as you mentioned the other day, the SD70 matches up well against the transition-roof power car.

Date: 04/15/15 08:42 Re: UP949 Rolled Into the Shop Author: Realist The motors and wheelsets have been sitting in the
Cheyenne Steam Shop all along. There was no interest on the part of one particular manager in getting the unit repaired. Date: 04/15/15 11:06 Re: UP949 Rolled Into the Shop Author: Bob3985 kdrtrains Wrote:

The UP 949 got flat spots / shelling on its wheels coming back from the gathering at Spencer last year and sat in KC a long time waiting on the combos to be shipped down to put it back in service. Now it will take place and head back home. Hopefully UP will get to use them on some Biz specials and other events. Bob Krieger Cheyenne, WY Date: 04/15/15 12:03 Re: UP949 Rolled Into the Shop Author: wingomann Just seeing the E units back in operation would be a welcome milestone. I was hoping that since the new guy was from a diesel shop that there would be no hang-ups in getting the diesels operating again.

Truth be told, it really didn't take 8 or 9 months to load them on a truck. It was 8 or 9 months that the current manager in Cheyenne didn't know, or simply didn't care, that there have been "E Unit" traction motor & wheel combos available in Cheyenne for some 10 years, as protection for the three "E Units". Somebody in Omaha found out about a week or so ago, and just like that, action was taken! Wonder how the current manager in Cheyenne feels about THAT? Date: 04/15/15 13:24 Re: UP949 Rolled Into the Shop Author: Emmo213 What is the status of the other E units? Not that long ago they were also named as being non-operable.

------------------------------------------------------- > Is NS on the hook for the repairs? Don't think so, as the "failure to conduct a proper air brake test" occurred on the UP. As I recall, there was minor flat-spotting done on NS, while enroute to Spencer, NC, but NS quickly took care of that. ------------------------------------------------------- > Is NS on the hook for the repairs? No. The damage was done east of Kansas City on UP when a road crew failed to properly conduct a required consist air brake test, which would have shown them that they had not opened the necessary MU cut-out cocks on the air brakes. Meanwhile, the manager who was supposed to be shadowing the move to prevent such things was flying home. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/15/15 13:36 by Realist.
