Outrunning the Storm at Deeth, Nevada
Author: JDLX

Often overlooked in the media reporting on the California drought is the similar impacts being felt in surrounding states, especially Nevada.  In Elko County we are in the midsts of four days of storms that, while not ending the drought, will definitely help.  This afternoon, I was in the right place at the right time to catch eastbound autoracks racing to stay ahead of an impressive cell...lots of rain, lightning, and wind in this one.  Location is Deeth, Nevada, on the old WP.

Nice! So were you rained on after you took the picture?

Dave- I'll look forward to meeting you over the next couple days...I'm up to give a WP/McCloud River show Saturday afternoon.

To answer the other questions, I drove through the blackness on the way back to Elko, around Elburz the rain was coming down fast enough to have a couple inches of standing water on I-80.  However, storm came around the south side of Elko Mountain and missed the town completely...

Thanks for looking...

And we never forget the situation of 'Death at Deeth' on the Western Pacific years ago either.

Coldest I have ever been at a derailment was at Deeth in February, 1979.  -20 ambient, -40 wind chill picking up a grain train with 25 cars turned over.  Broken rail on the WP.

Nice shot Jeff.  That eastbound must have been just ahead of us coming into Elko.
