Utah Railway’s Provo to Ogden Manifest.
Author: SF5953

First off I need to give thanks to James Belmont for this one. He sent me a text letting me know the RUT6 11 had left Provo 10 minutes ago. I had to really hustle to go from my afternoon nap to get out the door and into position.  It was going to be close. After I walked into the Jordan Narrows, I had an eastbound coal train come through that gave me the opportunity to really get to where I wanted to be without risk, knowing my train would have to take the siding. When the eastbound went by the weather was terrible. Anyway I got in position the sun came out and in less than ten minutes here came my train. That is was some efficient railfanning.  I am a real sucker for this particular train. Getting Utah Railways big coal power pulling manifest is a real treat. This one was really special 5 unit 77 cars. I have spent many hours on multiple nights trying to pull this shot off. So once again thank you James.

4. Stumbled across this guy lying in the road on the way in, scared the crap out of me. Not a Rattler, I didn’t know that at first. I think he’s a gopher snake maybe some of you snake experts can identify him. He is about 3 feet long. I didn’t have time to photograph him on the way in.  But he was still there on my way out.

Great shots, except the last, the fewer of those I see the better. Nice consist and good eye! Curious, is this a daily train, and does it operate on a somewhat-predictable schedule? === === = === JLH

Looks like a bull snake.  Noted for a triangular shaped body cross section, and rattle snakeish coloration.  Plus sides are non poisonous and they eat rattlesnakes.  Pointed tail a good sign too.  They can get rather big too.

Great catch and shots! I had no idea the Utah had trackage rights up to Ogden, let alone run a manifest train! Curious why they just do not interchange these cars with the UP at Salt Lake City?

It runs 3 days a week in the evenings. The best chance for the big power is on Sunday. I can't rember the other 2 days. Sunday for shure. Departure time can vary. It used to be you were lucky to get it before sunset in the summer. I've heard of it's depart as early a 3pm lately. Yesterday was about 5.

They are basic doing BNSF local service under trackage rights from the UP SP merger. Utah Railway is working with the compitition so they don't play nice with UP. So yes they service Ogden. Thank you for the compliment.

Bull, or Gopher, Snake. A highly mobile and intelligent rat and rodent trap. Puts up a big show if alarmed, hissing and coiling. But basically wants to be left alone. I've picked them up before and never been bitten.
