RAC - 4. An unusual reporting mark for ARR. Does anyone have any details as to why the reporting mark and perhaps the function of this car. OTTX 91994 has an interesting load. Perhaps disused military vehicles heading for scrap? Thanks for any info Jonathan Fischer West Seattle, WA Date: 05/24/15 17:46 Re: Alaska Railroad anomalies Author: west Hi,
ARR #RAC 4 is an air repeater car, used during cold weather to improve braking capability. It's equiped with an air compressor and is placed about midway in a train. CP, CN and BN (at least) also used air repeater cars. The ARR car started life as a WW2 Army troop sleeper, and has been retrucked. Don Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/24/15 23:00 by west. Probably being sold for scrap. Date: 05/25/15 06:42 Re: Alaska Railroad anomalies Author: twin_star_rocket Not M114; those are M59s, predessor to the M113. Note the return rollers: no M113 or M114 had those. Might be headed for range duty; I shot up my share of these during my time in the Army.

And judging from the appearance of the middle one, they've been targets for awhile too. |
