CB&Q's "Silver Ranch" Unearthed in Topeka
Author: bnsfsd70

This afternoon, I followed up on a phone call from Nikon1 where he mentioned to me that BNSF's "other" ex-CB&Q dome car had found itself outside for the first time in probably a decade.  In this case, the other ex-Burlington dome that's around the shops is the "Silver Veranda," that can be seen here: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3499892,page=2

According to THE Dome Car site ( http://www.trainweb.org/railnewspb/Q/#4719 ), this car was the "CB&Q 4719 "Silver Ranch" coach for 'California Zephyr' - became BN 4683(not applied), to Amtrak 9453 - retired 7/81, to Salt Lake Garfield & Western(1982), to Kasten Railcar 9453 (800036), reviewed by VIA for purchase but was declined due to fire/vandalism damage, to Northern Railcar, to Kasten Railcar, to BN 1(not applied) (1991), then BNSF 22 - stored in Topeka KS (2000)."

Hopefully this one can come back to life at some point, as it's awfully tough to beat those old Budd cars.

That's a really nice looking car.  In spite of its current appearance.

Anybody know what Via figured it would cost to get it rail worthy?

Uncle Warren has a well deserved reputation as a skin flint in spending the company's money.

Hope it doesn't stay outside too long, with the missing glass panels.  It's probably pretty shredded inside, anyway.  Sure looks like it could someday be 'reborn'.

A skin flint.  I'd never heard that before.  Thanks for teaching me a new phrase!

Yeah, that was my thought as well, esp. considering that we're in the middle of monsoon season here in Kansas.  The car certainly looks to be in pretty good shape.

It's in storage and will go in for rebuild after they get done with the other dome that they're rebuilding now

i remember seeing a Budd built fluted silver dome obs wearing early Amtrak paint in Newark,De years ago in '79 ... don't know the heritage but CB&Q/D&RG/WP surely came to mind altho at that the Rio Grande was still operating their own train .

Good catch Jeff!  I had heard it was in one of those long buildings in the car shops area.

I know, it was like folklore!  Its at the very east end of those buildings, just west of Golden.

For what it's worth, "skinflint" is one word.
