NM Freight Train Collision - Follow-up
Author: Cumbresfan

Over the weekend I stopped by the location of the head-on collision of two freights that occurred on April 28 just south of Roswell on the Southwestern RR line which killed one person. The preliminary NTSB investigation found a siding switch locked but positioned for the siding. The Trainorders thread discussing the collision  can be found at the link below:
http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,3728426,page=1

Engines involved in the wreck were BNSF 1063, 1077,4430, 5108, 5432 and 7134; Ferromex 4070, 4072, and 4682; Southwestern RR 3124 and 9851.

1. SWRR 9851 suffered the worst damage. It was the southernmost engine on the siding next to a grain car which obviously rode up over the front end..
2. SW 3124 is seen next to a Ferromex engine with a damaged grain car on the other side of the tracks.
3. BNSF 1077 shows evidence of engineer side damage.

4. A Ferromex engine.
5. A second Ferromex engine. One of the damaged grain cars can be seen in the background. The dirt pile at right is diesel contaminated soil placed on plastic for further removal.

I don't have the info on which was the southbound engine that first went into the siding. All the engines show evidence of damage including missing or damaged couplers, bent front pieces, etc. I suspect all are candidates for salvaging parts and/or scrapping.

What about the people?
What about the rules lesson for everyone else?
This is just hardware.

Man that is a shame, both for the people and the power involved. That SW 9851 started out life as the DRGW 5507, sad to see it (probably) end it's operating career like this.
