Washout on Cima Sub MP188 Around Afton Canyon
Author: CaliforniaSteam

There was a bad washout on the Cima Sub just east of Dunn, CA around MP188 yesterday evening. The line won't be re-open until Saturday sometime. Looks like detours going through Roseville for some trains and Yuma for others. There will be some extra traffic over Tehachapi and Donner Pass the next few days.

May not happen by Saturday. According to the radar images, it looks like that whole area from Yermo east is getting hammered again this evening.

The word on the railroad street is there are no re-routes planned for the coast. The ZCIG1, KLBG3, ZLAAH routed via Yuma, AZ eastbound so far. The MWCNP routed via Tehachapi-Roseville-Portola-Elko-Salt Lake City, UT eastbound. The KG1CI, KG1LA, KG1LAC, ISCLB, all re-routed Salt Lake City-Elko-Sparks-Roseville-Tehachapi so far westbound. The MNPWC re-routed Salt Lake City-Elko-Portola-Roseville-Tehachapi so far westbound.

This is a good lesson on the value of redundancy in a network.
Kind of parallel to the SP and WP routes over the Sierras and on to Salt Lake City, some fancy business plan may show they don't need both.....until they really, really need both.

Well said, railsties, long live the Portola to Winnemucca route!
