Threading Through The Tunnel
Author: walstib

An eastbound Union Pacific manifest threads through a tunnel at Castle Rock, Utah, today.

In order to make using my drone faster and easier, I devised a docking platform, which has proved invaluable on my current road trip.

If you would like to read more about the docking platform, check out this topic over in the Railfan Technology forum:

If ever there was a tunnel that could be daylighted, that sure looks like the one.

Looking at the hill above the tunnel it appears they may have started doing that at one time and then quit for some reason.

The ground in that part of Utah can slip uncontrollably if it gets wet. Likely the tunnel is there because they'd have to cut way too far back to make stable sides.

Looks like they removed the dirt above the tunnel to reduce the weight, and lessen the likelihood of a slide.
