Eastbound And Down
Author: pyroman

Winding back to January 23 I found NS 9689 on the move into La Crosse, WI about to cross over Mormon Coulee Creek. Radio chatter has CP 475 across the river setting out a tank car that decided to lock it brakes in an effort to avoid continuing northbound.  With the car set out the engineer slowly pulled train under the I-90 project at Dresbach, MN to pickup the conductor who hitched a ride to avoid walking back to the headend in the frigid wind.

And having a bit of time I easily beat the train now heading for Donehower with a meet of #8.

Amtrak showed up with a touched up cab and I went on my way to the grocery store.

Fast forward to this past Saturday with temperatures in the 30s and pushing 40 it was finally a nice day – except for the clouds.  Intel had the NS 1071 on its way east on CP 580 so I headed out with intention to just grab a shot a Dakota as I had gotten some nice sunny shots last year when it came through – but as I headed north the clouds started to break.  ATCS showed the train up as Weaver so I headed for Minnesota City to see what the shot there looked like.  The sun popped out just as a convoy of railfan vehicles came down the road soon followed by the 1071. Just a few fans out trying to shake the cabin fever.

Leaving Minnesota City I thought I heard a McCall tune but by the time we reached the south end of Winona it was Jerry Reed time and although there was no Trans-Ams there were some blockers pushing the limit. NS 1071 rolled around though the curves at Homer as at least 8 vehicles idled on the side of the highway.

Not looking to having a chat with smokey and a donation to the state of MN decided to settle for a quick stop at Lamollie, MN and then at Dakota.

One last series at La Crosse as the train pulled slowly over the Mississippi.  Later I took the long way home from Menards to grab a nice colorful train roll though Dakota, MN.

That signal never did turn red after  1071 got by it.  Wonder why?
