There were several dual mode air carriers but the most notable was the Matson Line that operated ships both cargo and passangers from the mainland to Hawaii and passanger DC-4 aircraft. (They still operate container ships to Hawaii.) The agency that later became the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) made the decision that one company could not own more than one form of transportation. That put a lot of airlines and their pilots out of the business.

Notable among the grounded pilots was a very senior Captain with the Matson airline who, when he was tossed out of the cockpit, needed to earn a living. He found a way, writing of his flying life. You may remember him...Ernest K. Gann. Some of his work was "The High and the Mighty" and "Fate is the Hunter" still resonates in literature.

There was another railroad/airline connection that is probably more memorable to rail fans.

David P. Morgan is remembered as a railroad writer and editor at Trains Magazine for many years. What many people did not know was that his younger brother Len, was a long-time Captain with Braniff Airlines and also a very popular writer for Flying Magazine and a host of other publications.

Both left endurine legacies in their fields and like Gann, Len Morgan remains in icon in the flying community...just like his brother David is to the railroad community.

Canadian Pacific owned not only the railroad, but an airline, steamship company and a chain of hotels.

The Santa Fe service has been detailed.  However, the BN had an air freight division, didn't
have their own planes, in the 70's, don't forget that.

A Sante Fe passenger plane and a Sante Fe passenger train would have been a great match on the Transcontinental Air Transport...
