Western Railroad Discussion > Winter encore on the Moffat last weekendDate: 05/05/16 07:05 Winter encore on the Moffat last weekend Author: Diamond_D In typical Rockies fashion, winter was back full force this past weekend even though the calendar said May 1st. I was lucky enough to catch a few trains in daylight both Saturday and Sunday
1) Amtrak 5 crosses South Boulder Creek near Pinecliffe on its westbound journey 2) I couldn't beat the train to Rollinsville, so I had to settle for this going away grab shot 3) Later that morning, the westbound BNSF manifest waits in the snow and fog at Tolland for its eastbound counterpart Date: 05/05/16 07:08 Re: Winter encore on the Moffat last weekend Author: Diamond_D 4) Eastbound BNSF heading downhill between Tolland and Rollins
5) Sunday was much like the day before, with even more snow on the trees and ground from some overnight showers. First up is Amtrak traversing the horseshoe near Blue Mtn Rd 6) And approaching the entrance to Tunnel 1 Date: 05/05/16 07:10 Re: Winter encore on the Moffat last weekend Author: Diamond_D 7) Shortly after #5, a UP coal empty departed Denver headed west. Here it's passing a line of calves on their way to get fed
8) Nearing Tunnel 1 9) On the main at Cliff Date: 05/05/16 07:14 Re: Winter encore on the Moffat last weekend Author: Diamond_D 10) It was challenging to get ahead on the unplowed road to the tunnel, but we made it in time for a nice shot along the creek near Tolland
11) The last train for this trip was Sunday's westbound BNSF manifest as the snow had finally tapered off 12) What a difference a few hundred feet can make - after playing all day in the winter wonderland, it was quite interesting to see the snow line at the bottom of the foothills. Back in Denver it was just a rainy, dreary weekend (something we don't say too often!) stunning. IOTD canditates, most definitely. And -- looks as though ya got some great possibilities for your Christmas cards there, too. :) Thanks so much for going to all the trouble of going out in weather like that. Brrrrr!! (How cold was it at the coldest?) There is nothing like frshly-fallen snow to make any place look lovely.
