Trans Pacific Partnership good for rail!
Author: Lackawanna484

The Washington Post has an article today about the TPP. The proposed treaty would dismantle barriers between the U.S. and 13 Asian nations.

The article sees gains in logistics, transportation, and related areas. Very good for rail, trucking, docks, warehouses. Hugely negative for manufacturing in the US

I'm surprised that U.S. manufacturing policy hasn't been more widely discussed and contested.

If its bad for manufacturing then its bad for rail.  Manufacturers receive shipments by rail both for raw materials entering as well as finished products leaving.  Therefore anything that reduces manufacturing will hurt rail traffic, regardless of any intermodal volume increase due to increased imports.

Is there anything to the supporters' argument that the TPP will improve the banking transparency, environmental conditions, and control of copyrights in the trading partner nations?

Rail use seems moot to me. Hauling imported steel from LA to Anyplace USA is probably a longer haul than from Chicago to Anyplace. Its the overhaul cost in good paying manufacturing jobs that is worrysome.  On the otherhand probably 90% (non-union workers) shop to find the lowest cost items. When it came to USA clothing we let our money talk and 99% is now made elsewhere. The government only opens the door.....and why shouldnt they?
