BNSF 3800 giving a shove
Author: oyw

Attempting to escape the clouds last Sunday morning, I found myself trackside along Santa Fe Ave in Hesperia, CA watching a parade of very ordinary BNSF westbounds. When BNSF 5219W passed around 7:30, I didn't pay much attention until the rear DP came into view. Fortunately it was a fresh new pair of BNSF Tier-4 GE's, and needless to say, a short chase ensued.

1) The chase began about a mile east of the Hesperia airport as BNSF 3800 and 3773 shove on the rear of the westbound stack train.

2) A red signal at Lugo allowed for a broadside roster shot of the 3800 as it waited for traffic ahead to clear.

3) Five miles further west, the pair nears Summit at MP54 where they will soon be under cloud cover for their journey down Cajon Pass.

Thank you for looking.

Nice shots, Bob. Love the first image with the clouds draped over the mountains.

How can you tell if one of these has the middle axle "lifted?"  I count four air cylinders, three brakes and one lift/weight transfer, right?

Look at the cylinder to see if the piston is extended. If it is, then the center axle has reduced weight on rail. There are two brake cylinders and two DWM (dynamic weight management) cylinders on each side of each truck.
