Valdosta Southern Boxcar Tehachapi?

Does anyone know anything about this boxcar or when it was originally built. We saw this on a UP train heading towards Mojave on 5/28/16. We zoomed in on the builders date and it looked like 4-56 or 4-76 but we're not sure. Thanks in advance!

It was definitely not built in 1956. Most likely it was built sometime in the mid 1970s to early 1980s.

It looks like it was probably built in June 1976.

Valdosta Southern was/is a Georgia shortline that runs 10 miles between Valdosta to Clyattville, GA. This railroad now operates as Valdosta Railway and is a G&W property.

That at boxcar was definitely one built during the per diem bubble of the '70s.

Thanks for the info guys, that makes more sense than the fifties!  Pretty cool car, nice to see it still rolling!

I just won an Athearn model of one at the RPM meet in Monroe, WA, last weekend.  I had never heard of it before and there aren't a lot of photos of its cars around.

That same boxcar came through Tyler Tx about two weeks ago.

During the "incentive per diem era", many shortlines owned cars and many investors were lured into this (for lake of a better term) tax scheme.

I guess that explains why there are so many shortline cars from seemingly random or small roads from the 1970's, still running around with cool paint and slogans, even if it is for new owners(like this one).  Now if we could just keep those taggers off of them!

I stopped in Valadosta a few times in the 1980s.  There was a huge citrus packing plant, box manufacturer, and a fair amount of activity for a rural south Georgia whistle stop.

A large number of 50ft boxcars were bought up in the last year or so by a leasing company. They seem to be popular in the Central Valley of California, they follow the UPRR I-5 Corrider through Dunsmuir quite often.

This has been going on for many years now. The cars just change reporting marks and number periodically.
