UP light power in So Cal
Author: casco17

A few pics from today (Friday June 24)...
1. Light engines moving eastbound at track speed on the former SP Sunset route past CP North Montclair...
2. and 3. Gen set units near Torrance on former SP/PE rails; I don't recall seeing five together before.  UP really needs an overnight enclosure for these engines!

It's pretty sad the UP can't keep the graffiti off their LA local power.  Couldn't they build a chain-link fence "cage" and park them it...

Imagine how much spray paint is wasted in a year! I should buy stock in a manufacturer.

When they park them at night and set the alarm, they should have a device on them that when someone is within five feet, it sends a a million volt arc that fries the tagger to a crisp!!!!!!!!!!!! Then maybe the others will figure it out. But nothing will happen in this panzi lets all get along society of ours. Remember what the good mayor of LA said "we must thank the people that got out of prison for serving their time"

Sure they could. Then have to hire a crew full time to go around to all those "cages" on a weekly basis fixing the fencing where the graffiti painters have cut through. Oh by the way, the engines will still end up with graffiti on them.

At the end of Kearney St just off Mission Rd north of 1st St and adjacent to Pueblo del Sol subsidized housing.  The site has NO fencing or gates; ANYONE can drive in Kearney St and right up to the units - no walking involved!!

I guess that convenient access for fueling trumps everything else.

I thought UPY refers to engines that can be operated from a belt-pack...maybe a UP expert can advise....

A lot of UPY units have remote control capability, but the reason UP started using the UPY reporting mark for "yard" engines was to free up space in the regular UP reporting marks 0000-9999 series for more road locomotives.  They hadn't filled every last space with the old reporting mark, but maintaining logical number sequences was getting tough.
