The "NEW" Panama Canal Ready For Business ? Not so fast !

Very interesting take from the New York Times on the shoddy build done on the Canal and the possible setbacks ahead.....

What an interesting article,  I hope the situation doesn't end up being as bad as the article makes it out to be.

I have a bad feeling that somehow this "mess" will fall on the pocketbooks of the American taxpayer to fix!

Not only that, but it's already too small for the current generation of big ships.

Refer to the link above and, by all means, read the article we're discussing here.

Are any of the gulf or east coast ports going to restuff those 20&40' containers into 53' domestic containers? Just wondering because KCS is getting new 40' 5pack intermodal cars from Gunderson. CJ

Then there´s the new canal in Nicaragua built by the Chinese.....ha ha

Sacyr is a terrible contractor.  They low-balled the bidding for a huge traffic mitigation project in Santiago, Chile. In involves the Rio Machopo river bed.  In April, we had a 100-year rainstorm and said contractor hadn´t built the required diversion tunnel to spec, which caused extensive flooding in the Providencia business/commercial district.   The worst was three office tower where repairs, getting mud out of underground garages, etc. will take six months and cost almost as much as the original construction cost of the project five years ago.  Sacyr´s response....¨we didn´t expect such rainfall¨   They´ve done sub-standard work all over South America but in most cases,  they got bids due to government friends, etc.  You can´t make this stuff up.

Please read this thread from this past August about the
huge problems with the concrete in the new canal -- which
seem to be impossible to fix:

(I wish with all my heart that we could give everyone in charge
of every important project an incurable case of passionate
dedication to safety and high quality.)

I believe those new intermodal cars are for increased auto part imports through the Port of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico.   With so many new auto production facilities being built in Mexico it stands to reason many of the auto parts will be brought in from oversea's (primarily Asia) then taken by rail to inland distribution centers.

Consider the source.   Several years ago the New York Times published an expose by one of the same reporters that Operation Lifesaver was a cover-up by railroads of their dangerous crossings.

The NYT has been running front page hit jobs almost every Sunday. On consecutive weeks they had one candidate's alleged mistreatment of women, followed by his trail of unpaid bills and use of foreign employees, followed by this article.

One has to admit Op Lifsaver is pretty lame . I read this article and most of it rings as being very accurate .Many sources are quoted.
