Container Ship Turntable
Author: BrianA

While photographing trains at Tacoma, WA Sunday 7-24-16 at the Temco grain yard (which was empty by the way) I did not pay much attention to the container ship in the top right hand corner of the first photo but soon saw the two tugs were turning it around in Commencement Bay before towing it backwards into the Port of Tacoma.

And I am guessing some of those containers may be working their way east on stack trains right now.

In Two Harbors, MN this 1000 foot ore boat turned itself, iterally on a dime, with its own bow thruster and stern thruster last sunday.

Interesting in the foreground, the RV 5th wheel pulling another trailer. I don't think it's legal everywhere, I have seen it in California and Oregon. Surprised more people don't do it. Take your boat and trailer along.

I've witnessed people going through Illinois pulling an RV trailer followed by a boat behind that.

Requires a Class A license.

It happens in Wyoming all the time.  Trailer and boat, trailer and snow machines or four-wheelers.

Offtopic...My brother in law pulls a boat behind his big camping trailer. Gets pulled over quite often and the highway patrol officer says that most people who do this lack the proper license.

It also tears the hell out of the frame of the first trailer, most of them are not designed to tow anything behind.

The Grain elevator in Tacoma sure has had some interesting power over the many years. At one time the locomotives all had extensive spark arrestors on the exhaust, I'm guessing they simply stay out of the loading areas now and use a 'handle' of cars to switch with. Would think it would keep my Cheerios a little cleaner as well.

Idaho allows up to three trailers in tow. And I've seen it quite often there too.

I suppose you could think of it as a tender and caboose.

I want to see some one back one of those.

If there's more than one unit trailing, it should be on steel rails and be pulled by a locomotive.

Illegal in B.C., Canada, not encouraged in Ontario.
