BNSF GP60Ms for rebuild
Author: Ohiorailfan

I have heard there are some GP60Ms headed for rebuild in Kentucky. I was just wondering if anyone can confirm where they are going in Kentucky

Thanks

According to my notes, the following GP60Ms have been rebuilt and repainted: 107, 109, 116, 117, 119, 125, 135, 136, 139, 140, 142, 144, 145, 148, 150, 152, 153, 154, 155, and 157. This info is about a month old and this list may be a little longer by now.

The ATSF 144 was wrecked on Cajon Pass - so the BNSF 144 must be a different unit.

Same for 148 and 152 - both wrecked when nearly new.

You are correct, but the current units to wear those numbers were renumbered a few years ago when the GP60s were remumbered from the 8700s. BNSF 144 is ex. BNSF (ATSF) 159 and 152 is ex. BNSF (ATSF) 162.

Are any still at Boise for rebuild? Adding those two lists together, I have 22 left which aren't rebuilt or in progress. I can't believe how quickly they've been cycled through.

Before I retired in 2010, they were in the process of changing out the desktop controls on those to a conventional EMD, AAR type. Is that complete, or is it still original on the unrebuilt units ?

None are at MotivePower in Boise, ID.  In fact, BNSF 113 had already been sent to Boise.  It then shipped to Progress Rail at Mayfield.  Two months later, MotivePower annonced layoffs.

There was a project at the system shop in Topeka that did that late 2009 through 2010.  Though, I've also read it was in the workscope for the GP60Ms that went through MotivePower in Boise.  I don't know if that's true.
