Do those SD40-2 locomotives have traction motor protection circuits limiting the load to 900 amps or so or are they in the red zones below 10 mph and pegged at 2.8 mph?

What is management trying to do?

No helpers?

I had it at 1150 amps, not sure of the trailing units. Once I got enough of her over the hill I notched down slowly as the speed slowly increased, and once at the bottom of the hill and clear of town I stopped for 10 minutes to cool down the traction motors. I'm kinda getting sick and tired of these monster trains, too long and not enough power.

29K tons, 2.65 miles long, 0.5 HPT, and no helpers or DP?  I can guess that experience will eventually reveal this is a BAD idea.

Holy Mother of God!!  WTF?  Only in flat land territory would they attempt something like that.  That train wouldnt make it 30 miles before stalling out here, assuming it even makes it through the sags at American Falls without getting multiple drawbars.

No helpers or DP on this train. I almost stalled though.

They really built them good in La Grange.

Agreed, they built them GREAT at LaGrange but talk about a feat of engineering...and no draw bars or couplers broke. Helluva job!!

It's so sad that the RCP&E is unable to generate any decent sized trains! With that in mind, even the SP
didn't get this crazy though .5HPT trains weren't all that unusual though generally on Haulers. I guess someone
in the brain trust figures that this isn't expedited traffic so drag as much as you can.

The 1959 Dakota Div track chart at multimodalways.org
shows a climb of 216 ft in 5.3 miles, so average about 0.77%.
So ... probably at least 500000 lb needed to
maintain constant speed. All five units were on
the front of the train?

Can't get a good run at the hill, either-- it follows
6.7 miles averaging almost 0.4%.

That's nuts, amazing job of not getting a knuckle.

All engines were on the head end. You are correct in that it is a climb from Iroquois to DeSmet, with the steepest climb about 4 miles from DeSmet where it is 1.3%. I am as surprised as everyone else about not getting a knuckle, I'm glad I didn't, for if I did, I would have never made it up the hill from a standing start.

Thank you, I'm surprised too, not getting a knuckle.

They have ran decent sized trains in the past, 70-90 car range, but lately, it's been over 100 cars, between 110 and 130, with a few monster trains. It all depends on carload traffic, but we are also short on conductors, so that might be the reason for these monster trains - combine two trains into one.

Typically run 8 entire way from Iroquois to DeSmet, unless you have more than enough power. Typical speed is 15 to 20 up the steepest part.

I would suggest you sarcastically suggest they replace the 4 SD40-2s with 5 8-40Bs but they may actually think that is a good idea and do it.

I see crossings out there in that country.  Glad I wasn't stuck at one of them while you rolled by!

That is nutty as F*. 30,000 tons and conventional... i'd be looking at my engr the entire time lol.

On one of my runs on Seligman, there are many hard pulls, up to 1.42%, undulating as hell, and drawbar can be up to 8450tons before pushers are required.

Lol, funny thing is that I did indeed suggest the railroad purchase some D8-40B to my GM during the company picnic, he asked me if there are anything wrong with the ones we have now, I told him no and that I was just curious, he told me they had some in storage and didn't need any more.
