More Holiday Express
Author: nomosantafe

I went down to Oaks Park yesterday to get some more photos of the SP 4449 in the daylight.

It quit raining for the most part and I was able to get some halfway decent photos.  There are only a limited few places wheer one can get an open shot.  Most all of the places that used to work for photos are now treed in as Oaks Bottom is a natural area and the trees have grown in the last 30 years.

Here are the photos I got.

2:00 PM Trip

1. Train is approaching Oaks Park with building in the South Waterfront area in Portland visible in the background.

2. Train Approaching Oaks Park Station

3:00 PM trip

4.  Coming through the trees in the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge

5.  SP 4449

6.  Train approaching Oaks Park Station.  The 4449 spent 1958 - 1974 stored at Oaks Park very close to this location.  This was the planned location for a railroad museum.  Portland's 2 other steam locomotives also lived here until the Spokane, Portland and Seattle 700  was moved to the Brooklyn Roundhouse and rebuilt in 1990.  The Oregon Rail & Navigation (UP) 197 was moved to the Brooklyn Roundhouse in 1996.  All 3 now reside at the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation Enginehouse (Squarehoue as called by the the crew).

Is #197 restorable to running condition?  Seems like a smaller engine might get used a little more, (if it ever runs).

The 197 will run "someday". Much work is being done... e.g. rebuilt air pump...
I'm told she is small to medium six figures in material costs away. This is a hurdle that will take a while to overcome.

Those are beautiful photos of the true Queen of Steam!
I really, really like #s 1, 2, 3, and 6 -- gorgeous!  And
And #4 has what I call the "cat-tail effect" -- meaing even
if all you can see is only a cat's tail, you KNOW where the
cat is.  :)

Thank you very much for photographing the beautiful and
elegant and classy 4449.  There is no such thing as too
meny photos of her.  What a locomotive!

GREAT pictures Randy....I especially like the one with the high rises in the background.    The OR&N 197 (UP 3203) is absolutely the right size for both the Holiday Express and the OPR road bed.   Hopefully operational within our life times.   Arlen
