Local media from about an hour ago reports 5 or 6 cars on the ground near Hilgard.  Hilgard is a few miles west of LaGrande, Ore.  Photo is from Elkhorn Media Facebook site. (photo credit is Sarah Maxwell)

What's up with all the derailments on the U.P. lately?? They just had one east of Pendleton, OR and a bad one in a tunnel around Joso, WA on the Spokane-Hinkle line.
Tragically, a Spokane-based conductor was also killed at Wallula earlier this week. This has been one crappy winter...

Knowing the area and the time of year would not like to be on that crew its nasty up there.

About the conductor killed outside of Pasco WA, have a friend who works doing the same for BNSF at Pasco didnt have a RR name at first and the worry set in. Its terrable and this time of year its also hard to do that type of work safe due to the ice.

I don't kow when UP offically got the line open. Trains have been moving since fairly early Saturday morning.

This is the second derailment at Hilgard in recent weeks. They got a Soda Ash train last time. I wonder if this has something to do with DPU's on long trains, or track conditions?
