Canadians to Oakland
Author: jimB

Thanks to a heads up from jmf1910 that I almost missed, made it to Hearst Siding (Sunol) on the Oakland Sub for the GMFOP2 Grain Empties with a Draper Taper C40-8M leading. Not a consist we are likely to see often in the Bay Area!

Lots of fans out in this break between rain storms.

After entering the Niles Sub Southbound (compass West), shot these 2 at Sequoia Rd which is just East of the Fremont station. The bridge is BART.

Final two are at CP Carter (Newark) moving from the Niles Sub to the Coast Sub (North).

Second is at Jack London Square (Oakland) crossing Broadway passing the Overland House.

Any other CN unit leading would have been a great event already, but Draper Taper Leader really takes the cake. Great report!

WOW!!!  Great catch -- THANK you, jmf1910!! -- and
gorgeous photos, every one of them.  Whod'a thunk it --
CN locos on the point of a freight in the East Bay?
And a Draper Taper, even!!

VERY nice wqork!!

Methinks most of them are IOTD candidates .,
("Image Of The Day")

Beautiful.....

(Hmmm... lemme see.... SP 2451 was a P-5.  <G>
Can't help it when I see a loco number beginning
with "24" or "44".  <G> )

Amazing - And as far as I know, they are not supposed to be used on the front, that was the reason for all the trailing F-45's in their last days, because the straight-up ladders were deemed unsafe. Now time has gone on and few remember - always nice to see them in front, something different. Great job with the photos, I think there must be an IOTD lurking here, too. === === = === JLH

Such a killer train, really glad you were able to get out there and get so many good shots in great lighting, a big score for sure.

How are the controls in this model of unit?  Do crew members have to be "qualified" on this type of locomotive to operate it?  I could see how that could be a problem with "foreign" power.....

Controls are just like every other unit on the rails. No special qualifications needed.

Does that leader have a desktop or control stand?

While I didn't get a close look it appears this train is sitting in Eugene getting fueled for the trip to Canada. If this train will be given to the BNSF in Portland it should keep the solid CN consist. Unfortunately if it'll go east on the UP it'll have to get a UP leader for the cab signals. Either way it's virtually guaranteed to be a nocturnal trip up the Brooklyn Subdivision to Portland.
