Last Sunday on UP's Moffat Sub west of Denver -

​Photo 1 - The westbound Winter Park Express is entering Tunnel 19 west of Crescent Siding, CO. If you look closely, you can see the rock bolts holding up the side of the natural-faced rock tunnel.

​Photo 2 - I missed westbound Amtrak No. 5 and a coal empty while walking out from Tunnel 19 and driving back to Coal Creek Canyon, but I knew that the more important second westbound coal empty was leaving Denver led by UP 7400, the Breast Cancer Awareness unit, here approaching Tunnel 1 curving out of Coal Creek Canyon.

​Photo 3 - In the waning afternoon light, between Tunnel 1 and the Coal Creek Canyon Road Highway 72 bridge, Amtrak No. 6 glides down on its way to Distant Denver, the skyline of which can be seen in the distance.

Photo 4 - The returning Winter Park express was running late, and just as the full sun slipped behind the mountains, it too descended from Tunnel 1 onward toward Denver, which can still be seen in the distance 23 rail miles away.
The Winter Park Express Ski Train has but one more weekend left for this season. Happy railfanning! === === = === JLH

How do you get to Tunnel 19?  

Google Earth is your friend, there are two ways, both off of Highway 72 and turn right at Canyon Liquors, and one way is called "Tunnel 19 Road". === === = === JLH
