Having fun with a ex SP GP9
Author: lamta_jay

The morning after Winterail the group I was with wanted to know
where that ex GP9 was south of Corvallis so I directed them down
the highway that follows the old West Side Branch or what remains
of it. Approx 5 miles south is where the line now ends at a facility
that employs the service of an ex SP GP9.
These guys just couldn't take enough pictures of this facility and then
they took my picture taking their picture !
I actually took some pictures last year after Winterail in the rain. This
year the sunshine made the GP look much more colorful

Thanks for looking

Jay

Did the Westside Branch go all the way to Eugene?  When truck driving up there, I had deliveries to this facility, and often time parked my big rig near this engine and enjoyed lunch with the solitude and beauty of that area, and this engine.

Yes it did a very long time ago tying into the Coos Bay Branch near Danebo. Today it is almost impossible to find any signs of the line south of Monroe.

I've seen what appeared to be an old ROW near Danebo Rd. in the marshy area in West Eugene, and I've always wondered where it went?  Maybe that was it, or just an old spur to a long-gone lumber mill...

The right-of-way is visible west of Eugene in the swamps for a short distance.  Look at GoogleMaps, the right-of-way crosses Bodenhamer Rd at a diagonal just east of Fir Butte Rd.

You can actually follow it until it crosses Green Hill but then any signs of it after that are pretty much obliterated. I used to work the Coos Bay Hauler way back before the branch was sold and after that the Old Yard that switched those industries and I was never able to determine exactly where the West Side tied into the Coos Bay Branch.
