New NS Tier IV's in KC: A LOT of them!
Author: bnsfsd70

Within the past week, a number of Norfolk Southern's new, Ft. Worth-built ET44AC's have somehow found their way onto the coal trains to-from the NS in Memphis.

On Wednesday, I caught this southbound coal load running out of Murray Yard for the Ft. Scott Sub. The units were in a 2+2 arrangement, with the 3654, 3652, 3656, and 3650 doing the honors.

Not to be outdone, today, an awfully bizarre move came rolling north up the Ft. Scott Sub in Kansas City.  There weren't just four GEVO's on this one.  Oh no, there were NINE of them!  How in the world this train ended up with nine brand-new NS GE's on it is beyond me, but I was thrilled to be able to photograph it today, along with a number of other local railfans.

This train's consist was as follows:

NS 3660
NS 3659
NS 3667
NS 3664
NS 3666
NS 3651
NS 3665
BNSF (Booooooooo!!!) 9978
NS 3661
NS 3668

Enjoy, and happy hunting!

Nice catch! At least you were able to get some sunlight on them.

Any idea on the route these are taking from Ft. Worth to the NS in... Memphis?

Thanks,
- Jeff

NS has received the new units in Memphis, sent them to Chattanooga to be setup for service. Then the units were placed on BNSF empty coal trains in Sheffield AL or Chattanooga to be sent west for service on the RWSX Scherer coal trains.  NS owes BNSF a lot of horsepower hours.

Nice catches of the new units Jeff.  NS sure does look good when they are new and shiny clean like that.
