Spiraling up the Tehachapi Loop
Author: mukinduri

On April 5, 2017, a long BNSF stack train spirals up the Tehachapi Loop. Three engines at the front, two pushing behind.

The railroad is an impressive example of how nineteenth century infrastructure is still relevant today. As far as I am aware, except for the heightening of some tunnels and the straightening of a curve, the Tehachapi line is essentially unchanged since its construction in 1876.

What is the grade on the loop and what is the ruling grade over the entire line?

2.2 per cent from Caliente to Tehachapi with some minor variations at each end.
The Loop is continous 2.2 per cent.

There were line changes in the Caliente Creek canyon west of Caliente in 1885 and in 1936, plus a half-mile line change in 1921 that bypassed tunnels 12 and 13.
