Great Western Operations question.
Author: upheritage6

Yesterday I saw a Great Western train and it had a one person crew. It was an empty frac sand from Windsor to Fort Collins. There was someone in a Volkswagen Gulf delivering paper work and inspecting the train(?)
The engineer was the only person.
Are they a one man crew railroad?

They have a conductor following in a pickup truck. The GWR has been doing this for a number of years.

May not make sense but it works extremely well, couple times years past when I've been down on the Kyle
the conductor used my car and our stops and drops were way quicker than on foot.

I've also seen this done on several WAMX operations and AT&L. When my dad worked for K&O as a conductor during the grain season he explained how he would finish switching one industry, drive to the next and have enough time to finish a crossword or two before the 10mph train showed up. Doing this also saved time getting car numbers and such I believe.
