I totally get going out on the evening to watch the sunset, but how do you manage to determine where to go so where a train will roll by at that magic moment?

Does anyone know where the coal gets shipped too? I just spent the night on one.

I heard one destination was Japan. Some also goes to Mexico.

Right now most of its going to Japan, though there are spot buys occurring to Central / South America. The Japanese are moving away from nuclear power after their near disaster with the earthquake and tsunami. Utah coal is high quality ( low ash content ) and is mixed with other material from Indonesian and Australia sources. BUT, its all market driven. There are other sources of high quality coal around the world, so volume is dictated strictly on global market pricing.

Thank you for your photographic coverage of the Bay Area. Its far-reaching and diverse despite little freight traffic. I appreciate your efforts and creativity. Very nice work. I always enjoy your posts.

Chip is correct about the low ash content...it's the primary reason Japan has been buying this coal (but of course the high quality is another). The Japanese don't want to deal with a big ash disposal problem.

Chances are high they will continue to buy as long as the terms are reasonable...
