Western Railroad Discussion > Suds & Fruit @ The FrogDate: 06/21/17 23:01 Suds & Fruit @ The Frog Author: BoilingMan Now there's a Subject Line that writes itself!
This is a post to honor our local watering hole with a view- The Red Frog, just outside Colfax, CA on Hwy 174. Photo 1. This is the view from the deck at The Frog: Cape Horn on SP's Donner Pass. (Before the place went amphibious it was called the "Cape View") Photo 2. This evening's gathering. Starting on the left in front and working clock-wise: Steve (TO member Stevo_W), Myself (BoilingMan), Craig (SP3204), and PD (TO ex-pat SP4360) The Connection: 40yrs ago we all met working for the American Freedom Train. The Occasion: Steve & PD leave for Portland and the '49 in the morning. Debriefing at The Frog will follow next week (on Wiener Wednesday, I hope!) Photo 3. The Frog- worth a stop, guy's! Photo 4. A crop of Photo 1- an EB Fruit Block (hence, this posting's title) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/21/17 23:03 by BoilingMan. Very creative thread title! Your first photo is beautiful -- I just love it! A place to just go and sit and just mellow out, looking at the beautiful scenery -- and even some trains! :) And get some good food, too. What more could one want? Thanks for the group picture. Too bad PD/SP4360 is no longer on TO. I enjoyed his posts. And I know Steve_W. Glad that Steve_W and PD/SP4360 are going to ride the 4449 this weekend. I am kind of surprised that you and Craig/SP3204 are not going, too. It IS VERY price-y, with the least-expensive seats being those Amtrak cars with no dutch doors and rather small windows, but at least the passengers can go to the baggage car and take turns looking out the doors -- to see and hear the 4449 in all her glory. It is a real "sensory overload", and is an incredible experience. AND her stack talk -- Wow!! And she herself is "sheer poetry in motion". (Thanks to Howard Cosell for that phrase. Truer words were never spoken about the SP 4449.) Thanks, again, for the nice photos, especially the first one. And it is great being able to put faces with names. See, I just knew there was a TO style down-side to this, but, for life of me, couldn't figure out what it was... Thanks! I've never stopped for food at that place. The last couple of times I went by it was biker heaven. Date: 06/22/17 13:02 Re: Suds & Fruit @ The Frog Author: BoilingMan I moved up here 35yrs ago next week (Colfax for 5yrs, Dutch Flat since). I morn the loss of infrastructure (Norden complex & track 1), of course- but as to the trees growing?!
Hmmmm.... The view at American is gone, I guess, but that was long before I was born (and I'm OLD!). And the scrub obscures the east portal of Tunnel Zero now. Basically, I thought I was okay with things up here- but it's sounding like maybe I should be unhappy? SR Damn- and I just invested in some new glass, too! Jeez! What a WASTE! One thing about The Frog is that the owner's brother is a hog for the BNSF out of Stockton, I've had the pleasure of working with him many times. Like any bar there are some interesting stories that I've been told, the normal late night nonsense that makes one wonder how much insurance a place like that might carry. Still though, a wonderful view, great photos, and good luck on the travels ahead for those venturing north. That place makes tasty burgers. Date: 06/22/17 23:13 Re: Suds & Fruit @ The Frog Author: mapboy Didn't know there was a place like this in the area with a good view. I'll have to stop there some time.

I just watched "Across Donner Summit" the other day and marveled at the awesome shots of a W/B at Yuba Pass. I have photos from being there in 07 and the trees block most of the amazing shots they got for the video.

As for trees, chainsaws work! Mike Posted from iPhone Date: 06/23/17 21:54 Re: Suds & Fruit @ The Frog Author: BoilingMan ble692 Wrote:

We doubled down a bit on the main course ( I think your Dad downed 3 dogs!) and found we could only climb the one moutian. Sad. SR Date: 06/24/17 01:04 Re: Suds & Fruit @ The Frog Author: Fizzboy7 Not sure how in all my decades studying Donner, I've never heard of this place! Thank you thank you, it will be a stop for sure!
Date: 06/24/17 08:33 Re: Suds & Fruit @ The Frog Author: Stevo_Weimario For the record, we arrived and are now aboard the Iowa Pacific full dome "Scenic View".
We're supposed to depart any time now - subject, of course to the vagaries of railroading.. S_W Posted from Android Date: 06/24/17 08:46 Re: Suds & Fruit @ The Frog Author: BoilingMan God's Speed John Glenn, Dude!
