Thanks to a heads-up by a fellow Kansas railfan, I was able to catch a four-hour late eastbound Amtrak Southwest Chief at Holliday, Kan.

My information was that there were some special "goodies" on this train but I had no idea what that meant. What I discovered when the SW Chief arrived at my location was that three regular Amtrak locomotives were towing four new Siemens Chargers in the power consist. The engines were Nos. 4616, 4617, 4618 and 4619, according to a previous TO post. Today's No. 4 had 12 cars.


I had been hoping I would have the opportunity to eventually see one or more of the new Chargers. Certainly glad the opportunity presented itself Wednesday morning (July 26, 2017).

Neat, but that Surfliner is a tad far from home.
Maybe those "Chargers" will be assigned to LA-San Diego duty (support MLF SD Chargers???).

The Chargers on that train are for Illinois.

There will eventually be chargers on the Surfliners as CalTrans has bought a number of them.

Thanks for that! That was a healthy consist, both of locomotives and cars.

Just for the record, the Charger units also included 4619 (you showed 4618 twice).

Are these the locomotives my Amtrak friend told they are not allowed in the engine compartment while operating. Apparently they have a tendency to "throw" parts!
