Nebraska Traffic Frequency
Author: 37176

How do? I haven't been on TO for a while and I'm kind of returning to railfanning after a break too. I'll be in Nebraska laster this week for the eclipse and astrophotography and am going to reacquaint myself with the rails through there. I know there has been a significant downturn in traffic for some years but can someone briefly summarise how frequent traffic on the BNSF and UP is now? I know we are nowhere near to the old 150 trains a day I was used to years ago. I'm driving from Chicago to Crawford and back over 12 days.

I was out in June in the Sandhills. I drove non stop from Grand Island to Alliance. I passed 0 empties and 5 loads in that time. I heard elsewhere they are running around 25-30 trains a day on the line.

Watching some of the webcams along the UP this summer the triple track is seeing about 3-4 trains an hour with some gaps at times so I would guess somewhere 80+ a day on the triple track.

I will be traveling to see the eclipse as well and unless weather changes I will be on the UP triple track Sunday and Monday morning.

I'll also be out there. Watching the eclipse at a cousin's home in the country north of Gibbon.

I have two other railfan friends heading to the area and also a non railfan friend with Nebraska as a plan B.

From what I understood, the southerly route from NE to the PRB was closed and all trains were leaving the PRB via Crawford.

I'll be driving from Chicago on 17th August to Alliance arriving on 20th. After the eclipse I plan on driving back via the Triple Track and am staying in Sioux City, IA around 23/24th.

Other than railfanning, my main reason for going is the eclipse and astro timelapse photography. I'll be watching the eclipse from west of Hemingford, NE. Theres an old abandoned church hall there which I want to get in my shots.

Again, Terry, I see you gained access to the ranch. I recently wrote to the owners who told me they no longer offer accommodation or day access. I was looking forward to going up to Breezy again.

Yeah Laine had sold some of it when I was out there they are into cattle now and was gone the 3 days when I was at the ranch she gave me her cell number to call if I needed anything, She talked a little like the railfan cabin and access would come to an end, I hope it has not come to that as I was looking forward to going out there again
