Western Railroad Discussion > Ghost Engines if Eureka, CADate: 09/26/17 09:54 Ghost Engines if Eureka, CA Author: jimB The four long stranded locomotives on the former NWP in Eureka, CA are still there but have apparently received a coat of gray paint over the graffiti to make them a bit less unsightly. The southern most is the former SP 2872 on a freight car truck, and the rear facing unit is former commute geep 3190.
I won't try to cover the history of how long they have been stranded (search history on TO), but if they ever leave it will likely be by truck or barge, maybe in small pieces. Jim B Date: 09/26/17 10:14 Re: Ghost Engines if Eureka, CA Author: P Eureka Erika is a long way from anywhere. I was there last year with my family for a couple of days and I knew these were around somewhere, but I felt it was more important to spend my time amongst the Redwoods than trying to find these rusty hulks.
The railroad history there is fascinating though. Thanks for posting these Posted from Android Date: 09/26/17 10:27 Re: Ghost Engines if Eureka, CA Author: CPRR Is it me or do they all look like they are missing some components around all of the trucks?

Note the 'shop trucks' on the first unit, almost the 'milk crate' look for a locomotive. Wonder if the real trucks or traction motors are around. The other units have their trucks, seen upon magnification. James R.(Jim) Baker Whittier, CA Date: 09/26/17 11:05 Re: Ghost Engines if Eureka, CA Author: jimB They all appear to have re-bar gratings added to the cab doors and windows to keep them from becoming residential units.
The lead unit is missing the lower part of the pilot, maybe so they could get the front truck out? They are in the process of enclosing this area in new fencing. Jim B Date: 09/26/17 11:08 Re: Ghost Engines if Eureka, CA Author: dan pilots and steps have been hacked

Eureka has it's fair share of seediness and homelessness. TJY Date: 09/26/17 18:31 Re: Ghost Engines if Eureka, CA Author: Milwaukee What happened to the front truck and pilot of the 2872?

Maybe cut off too allow for easier remove of the front truck...? Jim B Date: 09/26/17 20:18 Re: Ghost Engines if Eureka, CA Author: JDLX Locomotives have been stranded there since January 1998. The City of Eureka ordered them removed a year or two ago. The now missing fifth geep referenced was the former Central California Traction 70, North Coast Railroad Authority owned it and scrapped it there in Eureka. The party from which NCRA leased the four other geeps attempted to move them out, hence the missing pieces and shop trucks, but my memory tells me they ran into some permitting and other issues in trying to get them moved, so there they sit. I did note when I dropped by them a couple weeks ago a good part of the outside siding in the yard has been removed and is being replaced by a waterfront walkway.
