UP C40-8/C40-8W mass retirement/some kept by UP
Author: brc600

From one of the UP sources:

With traffic on the upswing many units have been pulled out of storage at Union Pacific -- and that includes GE DASH-9 and DASH-8 units that are now back in service.
But not all of the DASH-8 GEs that are moving on the UP have been put back in service -- the majority have been sold to GE. There are three groups -- those sold to GE, those intended for scrap and those that UP will keep on the roster.
Many of the units sold to GE have been moved, or are moving, to Chicago's Proviso Yard. From there they will move to wherever GE wants them shipped. The first five units were interchanged in Chicago to the CSX at Barr Yard within the last week:UP 9195, 9429, 9533 were interchanged on 9/20/17
UP 9426, 9516 were interchanged on 9/21/17
Here are the numbers of the units in each of the three groups:

266 thatshow as being sold to GE 9101, 9102,9104, 9105, 9107, 9112, 9113, 9115, 9120, 9125, 9139, 9140, 9150, 9158, 9160, 9163,9164, 9172-9177, 9179, 9180, 9181, 9183, 9185, 9188, 9190, 9192, 9193, 9195, 9199,9201-9204, 9208, 9209, 9213-9216, 9218, 9219, 9223, 9225, 9228, 9229, 9233, 9235,9241, 9244, 9247-9249, 9256, 9263-9266, 9270, 9275, 9281-9283, 9286-9289, 9291,9299, 9300, 9303-9308, 9311-9315, 9317, 9319, 9320, 9323-9325, 9327-9329, 9332,9333, 9337, 9338, 9340, 9345, 9347, 9349-9353, 9355-9362, 9364-9367, 9369-9371,9374-9376, 9378-9383, 9385-9389, 9391-9393, 9396-9400, 9403-9412, 9414-9416, 9418-9421,9423, 9424, 9426, 9427, 9429-9431, 9433, 9434, 9436-9444, 9447-9459, 9461-9463,9465-9467, 9469, 9471-9474, 9476-9481, 9484, 9485, 9488-9495, 9497-9499, 9501, 9504-9510,9513-9518, 9520, 9523-9527, 9529-9531, 9533-9535, 9537-9539, 9541-9545, 9547-9551,9553-9555, 9557-9559 42 heading to scrap 9109, 9127,9135, 9145, 9157, 9169, 9184, 9189, 9196, 9200, 9206, 9207, 9227, 9230, 9237, 9242,9246, 9250, 9251, 9254, 9257, 9261, 9262, 9269, 9271, 9272, 9285, 9292, 9295-9298,9301, 9302, 9309, 9326, 9334, 9346, 9348, 9372, 9373, 9482 42 to remain on the UP roster 9152, 9240,9259, 9363, 9368, 9377, 9384, 9390, 9394, 9395, 9401, 9413, 9417, 9425, 9428, 9432,9435, 9445, 9446, 9460, 9464, 9468, 9470, 9475, 9483, 9486, 9487, 9496, 9500, 9502,9503, 9511, 9512, 9519, 9521, 9522, 9528, 9532, 9536, 9540, 9546, 9552

Why would GE want them back ? Lease units ?

Export, etc. They're not junk. You rebuild units from the inside. So, a cheap rebuild @ $100,000 per unit beats a $3 million new unit. Cash strapped third world countries can buy many rebuilds for the price of one new unit. brc600

What planes does General Electric have for these C40-8 and C40-8W locomotives? Possible rebuild and resell to other countries?

Likely to shortlines, Cuba (via Mexico) etc. Hard to haul grain, coal or ethanol with junk GP EMD's. The Iowa Interstate people told me switching to GE's GREATLY improved their bottom line as well as ability to handle unit trains. 2-3 GE's replacing 7 junker GP/SD38-2's is a no-brainer. The GE's, I was told, save over a gallon of fuel per mile. brc600

Sounds like the UP Nampa Yard will soon have a much shorter dead line.

I don't know if GE has any 'planes' in their corporation or not. They surely have a lot of plans for these units however.

It's funny -- but not too surprising -- that some of the units that are getting sold off have barely turned a wheel for UP since getting fresh paint. Like UP 9299, a standard cab dash-8 that got the flag / baby wings in late 2014/early 2015. I think it probably was out running for a little while in 2015, and definitely was for a month or two this spring -- and that's it. I wonder how many revenue miles it has logged since its time in Jenks...

UP 9299 was not repainted at Jenks. It was one of a handful done by Harbor Rail Services at Fresno, CA. SSW 9647 is another that was repainted at Fresno. As for the 9299, it did not make it back into service during this last Dash 8 hurrah in August and September this year. However, it was in service earlier this year, and actually was the last dash 8 to hit the deadlines during that round on 4/21/17.

I can’t imagine someone sitting in front of his pc typing all those unit numbers. Maybe it was copied and pasted from a railroad document?

Maybe, but parts of the railfan community are quite thorough about roster issues, and are willing to go to a lot of work to meet their shared high expectations of accuracy. To their credit.

I'm sure you knew what I meant. "Plan". A simple misspelling of the word. My apologies. It happens to the best of us.
