I just spent 8+ hours on the ex-UP NIWX 9129 running on the Eastern Washington Gateway RR. I had a student engineer who was getting rather frustrated switching with it. I was like the meme below.....

Canadian National,Main Central (Pan Am), Chessie Seaboard (CSX) run C40-8 locomotives. Burlington Northern Santa Fe , Canadian National, Chessie Seaboard and Union Pacific run C40-8W locomotives. The BNSF units may yet be in storage. Some may be out roaming the rails. Contrary to popular belief some CSX units are out roaming the rails as well.

CSX nolonger has any standard cab C40-8's, with the entire fleet having been sold back to GE. They actually have no standard cab GE's at all as the remaining B40-8's were also resold to GE.

While many CSX C40-8W's were stored plenty have remained in service. The 7300 series former Conrail C40-8W's are in the process of being retired, none of these are active.

Chessie System and Seaboard System never owned any DASH 8 series locomotive.
