More fun on the St Maries River Railroad
Author: funnelfan

The STMA crew almost had a little incident with the locals kids who were out of school for Columbus Day. Since the mill east of St Maries is on a long dead end spur with no sidings or other spurs useful for switching cars around. They must drag the loads all the way back to the yard and then shove the empty cars to the mill. In between pulling the loads and gathering up the empties, some local kids got out on the railroad bridge over the St Maries River. They left their bicycles on the track while they climbed down into the center pier. Thankfully the conductor who was riding point saw the bicycles and stopped short of them by half a car. One kid who had heard the train coming had scrambled up to the tracks to rescue his bike from certain doom, the other older kids were a bit slower to grasp their situation. After the kids removed the bicycles from the track, the switcher continued to pushed the cars out to the mill.
