Deere John...
Author: santafe199

…I’m dabbling in a couple of off-topic visual notes here, while waiting a looong time on a train with shiny new power on both ends ( https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4396429 ):

1. John Deere tractor model 8420 sits in a field just south of the rural “J Avenue” crossing southeast of White City, KS. UP’s siding here is nearly 4 miles long, and can at times be a bit of a “Bermuda Triangle” for crews attempting to get back home to Herington on their trains.

2. Later in the afternoon a US Army helicopter from nearby Ft Riley flies overhead back north toward the fort. I was mildly surprised that 1/640th of a second shutter speed could stop the rotor blades, giving me the very brief illusion of a winged airplane. Very THIN wings at that! The visible armament sure is menacing…

I believe the White City passing track was part of a long stretch of D/T the Rock Island had in that area.

You are more correct than you know: The Rock Island main line was DT ABS from Topeka Yard right on down (& into??) Herington, KS. It was converted to Single track CTC when the Cotton Belt (SP subsidiary) took over after the bankruptcy...

The CRI&Ps double track lasted until the O-K-T 1st shut-down. And then the SP boys and girls started ripping up anything that could be scrapped. Most rail fans in Kansas, are NOT great SP management fans! wag216 (and JoCoLB may want to add to this story)

You don't want to be looking into the business end of one of these if you're the enemy!

Practicing that old Army Helicopter pilot tradition of IFRR flight. I follow railroads.

Not so fast!!! This bird was flying due north (presumably back to Ft Riley), while the RR below runs NE to SW...

Flying north also puts it very close to the KP.
