Sounds Like the Southern Pacific to Me
Author: TexBob

I was headed home yesterday afternoon from a job when I heard the DS talk to the LHT43 local at Rosenberg, TX.
What caught my attention was the lead unit was UPY 2107, ex-MP GP50 3504 that was re-built into a MP20GP genset
back in 2006.

Neither UPY power, nor gensets, get on to the main line very often, so I diverted from my chores at home to
document this unit finally get a chance to stretch her legs. Little did I know that the ex-MP genset would
take me back to the "good old days", because UPY 2107 has a P3R2 horn, making it sound just like the SP did.

To the extent local crews have lots of seniority, I don't know if anybody on this local was an ex-SP guy, and
if they were I don't know if they noticed (or cared) that their train sounded just like an SP train. But I sure did...

Very unusual but pleasant. UP will have that replaced with a K3 if they notice this!

That sure sounds mice!! Yes, it does sound like the old-type horns. Music to my ears! Thanks!

Very cool! I really like the looks of those rebuilds. If they're going to change the innards of something, I prefer they leave the outards mostly alone as they have here. You don't see many videos of them at all.

Great video!

Quick note: UPY 2107 is actually a MP20B and uses a single MTU engine iirc, so it isn't a genset but is a green power rebuild.

Glad I finally got some sound of that MTU engine going :)

So UP still has P3 horns on their locomotives? I wonder if there are still any RS3L horns on UP's roster?
