This passed Tower 55 Fort Worth this morning...
Author: SPMemphisFreight

Going eastbound pulling a manifest around 805am today..

UP 5006 / 4709 / 9796 / 9733 / 2250 / 9573 / 9181 / 2388

2250 was tagged purty bad. 9573 with new paint was also tagged with black spray scribble all over it (don't tell me this is art).

Not sure of symbol.

The rear 6 units in that move were the first group of units that have just recently been pulled out of the Pantano, AZ deadline. That is the huge deadline that had 300+ units in it and was visible near I-10 east of Tucson. They have made 4 such moves so far to pull units out, and more will be occurring. Many of the C44-9Ws and SD60Ms there are planned to go back into service. The majority of the Dash 8s there are sold to GE and will be sorted out so they can be sent on their way to GE. A few of the Dash 8s there are keepers and will likely find their way to another deadline on the UP somewhere.

Oh cool -- yeah, 9796 was at the very end of the Pantano deadline. Us PNW people saw it a little in its last days of service (until now); in 2015, before its storage, it logged some time on the Albina-Lake transfers in Portland, then on the Nampa/Ontario and Ontario/Weiser locals on the Huntington Sub.

Thx for the info ble. Can we assume a few were going to Jenks for paint?

Probably safe to assume some will.

The return of the SD60's will allow some of the SD70's, that have been in local service, back into mainline freight service.

Seems like an odd time of year to be taking units out of storage but rumors persist UP will be moving more grain soon. Grain traffic is down on UP right now. One rumor is 1 loaded grain train per day to the PNW (Seattle/Longview/Tacoma) from the midwest. That is not something UP normally does, as most of the grain headed for the PNW comes off the CP at Eastport, ID.

BradleyMcKay,

There has been an influx on traffic off the CP at Eastport, ID. Seems like oil has picked up, multiple sections of the HKSK and it's sister, SKHK.. Also seems like the potash trains are hitting it hard and heavy.. Near constant congestion getting trains on and off the BNSF/UP connection at Napa Street.

About 30 minutes ago, I saw a meet at Cheney, Wash. on the UP. S/B was a potash train and N/B was an empty oil train.

I'm guessing all of those oil trains are going to Tacoma.

The city officials in Mosier must be apoplectic every time they see an oil train go by.

At this point the plan is for them to go back into service. Paint, if it happens, will be down the road most likely.
