BNSF Argentine Yard Question
Author: PRR_4859

Good Evening and Happy Thanksgiving:

What traffic does Argentine Yard primarily sort? I know Galesburg primarily humps traffic to and from the eastern roads, but what is the primary purpose of having a hump yard in Kansas City? Is there that much traffic that originated and terminates there? How many cars are humped per day at Argentine? How many are humped per day at Galesburg?

Also, what is the busiest hump yard on BNSF?

Thank you in advance.

Argentine is BNSF’s largest and busiest hump yard. It classifies trains to and from pretty much every where BNSF goes. That includes yards as far as Pasco (WA), Laurel (MT), Barstow (CA), Northtown (MN), Memphis (TN), Amarillo (TX), Belen (NM) and many more. It’s virtually the crossroads of their system. Galesburg is BNSF’s second busiest hump yard. While BNSF’s annual reports no longer provide the yard figures, Argentine was classifying over 1,800 cars a day in 2010 while Galesburg was classifying over 1,600.

Thank you. I did not realize it was the busiest yard. It seems like BNSF is set up well for carload movement as there is a hump at each corner of there system where traffic would originate or terminate. Are manifest trains still restricted to 45 mph?

Thank you again.

They're restricted to 45 only if they have cars that are restricted to 45.

Thank you. If there are no cars restricted to 45 mph, what is the maximum authorized speed for a manifest train?

Thank you again.

Over 100 TOB 45mph usually. Although I don’t know if the transcon allows 50 or not for freight over 100 TOB. They do for unit trains.
Don’t forget Barstow hump.
