Western Railroad Discussion > F-units in the Royal Gorge-Colorado

2018 started off with the Royal Gorge Route F-unit! Canon City and Royal Gorge Railroad, CRRX 403, F7A, and CRRX 1503, ex-Alaska RR 1503, F7B, running in the Royal Gorge along the Arkansas River at Parkdale, CO. January 12, 2018.

Canon City & Royal Gorge RR 403, F7A, built by Electro-Motive in October 1949, serial number 8563, ex-Chicago & North Western 4079-C, rebuilt for suburban service on 20 April 1961, and renumbered CNW 422 in March 1972 and CNW 403 in 1982. It was sold as CCRG 403 in 1998 and became RGR 403 in 2000.

CRRX 1503, F-7B, ex-Alaska RR 1503, EMD built 12/1952, serial number 17714.

The 5-car train had a full length Budd dome, CRRX 553, named Buena Vista. It was painted Royal Gorge scheme during 2017.

What are those boxes on top of the dome car?

The F-units had not been used in recent years. Royal Gorge Route 3104 and C20 (?) had been working on the Royal Gorge excursion trains. I found those two units on the east end of the other passenger cars that were left at Canon City January 12, 2018.

Air conditioner units are on top of full length dome CRRX 553.

Air Conditioners. The domes can get pretty warm when it's sunny.
