BNSF CAPEX 2018
Author: sums007

The railroad announced their plan yesterday. Anybody have an idea what's in the works in terms of capacity improvements?
There's still possibilities in the PNW, for example.

So far the only projects that have dribbled out into the press that I know of are:
1. Start of DT Sandpoint, ID bridge and approaches. Number one BNSF choke point
2. Summit,CA to Barstow,CA 3 track. Reason: There are now 4 tracks up the Cajon grade, one of which is UP. They are sending many more via LAandSL, and these cross onto BNSF at Silverwood, near Summit. Need extra track to make it converging 4 tracks to 3
3. Add 3rd track from Needles, CA to Ibis, up the grade
4. Add 3rd track Belen NM to Dalies NM, up the grade.
The press release says $500million, which is a lot. Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Texas are candidates. So far nothing in media.

UP is sending almost everything moving between the LA Basin and Illinois (Global 1,2 and 3) via Las Vegas, so it's bumped up traffic levels a bit.
Traffic to/from Global 4 goes via Tucson and Pratt. BNSF probably doesn't much care for the westbound UP coal trains either.

BNSF started to do some work between Algoma and Coccolla ID last summer, I expect that work to continue. They also did a bunch of surveying between Boyer and Colburn ID and I have heard rumors or double track there. Hopefully they actually start on the bridge at Sandpoint. Even if traffic drops off the current bridge is starting to fall apart and need some serious work on it.

That 3rd track West of Needles almost needs to run to Goffs, the monster trains really don't make much speed
through there and there's frequently am EB at Goffs waiting for traffic to clear a bit.

Running a third track through the Mojave River Narrows should be "interesting".

On the Fallbridge Sub in Washington, look for about 5 miles of two main track around the area of Washougal.

If built, I would think the flyover at Frost would disappear.
