Western Railroad Discussion > SP concrete phone booth savedDate: 02/04/18 14:40 SP concrete phone booth saved Author: photobob For those that were worried about the concrete phone box being saved it miraculous reappeared next to the Dunsmuir Museum. It sat for years in front of the Mallet Shed which is being demolished. Its now in front of the mural that was painted on the side of the Amtrak Station which house's the museum.

Larry Date: 02/04/18 15:05 Re: SP concrete phone booth saved Author: TCnR Also liked the octagonal electrical building, one example of which is just around the corner of the building. I've been told the Octagonal style and the colored concrete booths were more of a southern area feature, as opposed to the Oregon Division, or Portland Division or Northern Division depending on which re-organization. There was an article about them somewhere, maybe just the drawings in the Steam Era Common Standard publications.

How about the big doors on the Mallet Shed, supposedly they were from an old SP roundhouse ? Date: 02/05/18 14:16 Re: SP concrete phone booth saved Author: johnsweetser TCnR wrote:

See pages 58-61 of "Ron Tarjany on Trackside Structures, Vol. 1," featuring an octagonal relay house that was at Saugus (photocopies can possibly be obtained by contacting the Kalmbach Memorial Library). >.. maybe just the drawings in the Steam Era Common Standard publications. Not quite the correct name. Drawings are on pg. 78 of Steam Age Equipment Co.'s "Southern Pacific Lines Common Standard Plans Vol. 5" (photocopies or scans of this can probably be obtained from the Calif. State RR Museum Library). (one difference between the Saugus relay house and the SP drawing in the Steam Age Equipment Co's. publication is that on the Saugus building, the recessed portions of the walls extended only to about 9 inches above the base of the building - like in the photo at Yuma posted by RedFusee - while in the SP drawing, the recessed portions of the walls extend all the way to the base) Edited 1 time(s).
