Unexpected Snowy Chase.
Author: mg8711

After a long warm weather chase of UP 1983 yesterday, I hadn't planned on getting out into todays single digit windchills and snow, but a friendly tip of an eastbound passing Junction City from a friend sent me out in search of snow shots.

1) East of Manhattan, KS, UP 8768 takes a loaded coal train down the KP. It's as cold as it looks.

2) East of Wamego, the 8768 approaches Airport Road kicking up the powder. The strong north wind was blowing the snow up to half away from the train.

3) The train stopped short of a signal east of Belvue, so when it passed me here at Schoeman Road doing all of 15MPH there wasn't much kicking the snow up.

4) West of Rossville, the sun shines through some less successful snow showers, Virga is what this phenomenon is called as the 8768 keeps moving east, friendly crew playing with the horn for me.

5) West of Silver Lake, the sun had tucked in below the horizon for the night.

6) UP 8802 gives the 8768 a shove, and would have made for a perfect last shot of the day but...

7-8) UP 8370 came into view at Rossville sprinting east back home to Topeka with the Junction City Turn, train MTPTP-04. No doubt a long cold day of local switching for the crew on board.

Great color and fantastic shots. I would think that one of these would be IOTD for Monday.
