Western Railroad Discussion > How many SD9043s are left on the up?Date: 02/08/18 11:06 How many SD9043s are left on the up? Author: bankshotone How many did the up start with? How many were sold to ns?
Has any Ben scrapped? Where are the remaining ones stored? Any chance for them to be reactivated? Thanks Date: 02/08/18 13:05 Re: How many SD9043s are left on the up? Author: CCMF UP 8000-8308, 309 units.
100 went to EMD which then went to NS to become SD70ACU's. 3 or 4 others were wrecked so there are a little over 200 sitting around. Bill Miller Galt, ON Edited 1 time(s). Thank you sir. Posted from Android Date: 02/08/18 14:25 Re: How many SD9043s are left on the up? Author: ns1000 I don't look for them to be reactivated....they have been in storage for years.
I look for them to be sold off.... Date: 02/08/18 14:46 Re: How many SD9043s are left on the up? Author: MC6853 Maybe NS can buy and rebuild more... They have 150 ex-Conrail Dash-8s that aren't getting any younger, and new ET44ACs are quite expensive...

These conversions will give them nearly 700 units that have been upgraded from DC to AC units. There also happens to be an SD80AC program planned at some point, when it will start, I don't know. Though the SD40E & SD60E conversions were deemed fairly successful, the Dash 8.5-40CW program has not worked well at all. Of the 13 units originally slated for rebuild, three are in service, two are in Roanoke waiting for rebuild and the remaining 8 are currently stored away. Every time I conduct a train with one of the NS C40-8Ws the old cab signaling equipment was removed. Are they planning on installing new cab signaling equipment on the C40-8Ws or will NS retire them in the future?

No new cab signaling equipment will be installed...they will be retired in the next several years. Chris Toth NSDash9.com Date: 02/08/18 20:50 Re: How many SD9043s are left on the up? Author: MP683 The second generation SD9043’s are stored around the system.
These have had the frame fixes and have the conductors computer screen. I’m not sure why they are not used with the surge fleet - but I know the older computer software no one likes. The -9’s and SD60’s with the basic computers and analog controls just seem to work. Power wise, UP rates the -9 almost the same as the 9043. So I’d suspect it comes down to fuel consumption. Both models essentially have common engine parts etc available. Aside from that, they may just be holding out for another good offer to offload them. I liked getting them back in th day as the conductors desk was the best EMD ever made when I sat over there. Date: 02/09/18 21:44 Re: How many SD9043s are left on the up? Date: 02/10/18 09:41 Re: How many SD9043s are left on the up? Author: ble692 The fleet started as 309 units. 205 are still on the UP, all stored. 4 were wrecked over the years. And there are the 100 that went to the NS.
The SD60M and C44-9W deadlines are currently being cleaned out pretty quickly. I wonder if we are going to get to a point where they start digging into the SD9043AC fleet? Remember the UP has basically no new units on order currently, outside of the 50 or so SD70AH tier 4 units that maybe someday will show up from Progress Rail.
