Last Friday's Trip to Omaha
Author: twjurgens

Went to the Camerail meeting in Omaha last Friday evening and as usual, we left for Omaha mid day so that we could do some railfanning on the way up. We found the OMAX coal empty switching onto the UP at Nebraska City but didn't find it in time to get shots of it on the BNSF. UP brings the train to Nebraska City and uses former CB&Q trackage to get to the Omaha Public Power District's plant south of there. The first two shots are at Nebraska City and the next two are at Union. Power was UP 8900 and 6284 on the head end and 6012 and 6313 as dpu's.

(first shot here is the dpu power on the OMAX empty at Union)

When we got to Union, we found power for the Louisville turn tied up in the shade on the west side of the yard. Didn't get both engine numbers but one of them was 730.

The Falls City local powered by 1085 and 810 was in the siding waiting for the empty to pass.

When the empty cleared, the local backed on to the main track and went to the south end of the yard to finish switching. We didn't have quite enough time to get shots of the train leaving town but were glad to get the ones we did!

All nice in a great day of railfanning. Lots of activity and track for such a small burg as Union. Nice shots.

Catching a local doing its station work is always cool. Nice job!

That's a take-away from Kansas State University's mascot "Willie the Wildcat" which I usually toss as a signature at my good friend Mr Jurgens who happens to have a slight personality quirk: He has this Nebraska University Cornhusker Nation type of affliction. (but I like him a lot, anyhow... ;^)

Wish I could say we stayed to watch him switch but we (more like me specifically) thought the train was leaving town. So....we hot footed it to a crossing about 3 miles south of Union and waited for the local to show up. After about a half an hour wait for a train that we should have had trouble beating to that crossing, we headed back to Union. A crew van was bringing back the crew members that had been on the ground so they were probably 10 - 15 minutes from leaving but we had to leave before they did.

Doesn't appear to be a cure or effective medication for this particular affliction.

1. I knew I had seen something similar in my travels
2. Also this but have never used it.
